Anatomy of a Mani-An Attempt at Nail Art

Disclaimer: I am not a nail blogger or professional (so sometimes I color outside of the lines and my cuticles look a bit ragged). I am merely a girl who LOVES nail polish!

So I decided to try my hand (ha!) at some free hand nail art and went for a leopard/cheetah print accent nail. I think it turned out pretty good for a first attempt, but there is definitely room for improvement for the next time I give it a try (and I will be doing it again). I don't think that I'm adept enough in the terminology to describe how exactly I did this, but I will tell you the polishes I used to do this...

In the top picture, from left to right:

Julep Base Coat (used on all nails)
Julep Nail Vernis in Hayden  (used on all but accent nail/ring finger)
Julep Fast Dry Topcoat (used on all nails)
China Glaze Nail Lacquer in Champagne Kisses (used as base on accent nails)
Julep Nail Vernis in Sasha (used to spot on top of glitter on accent nails)
Sinful Colors Professional Nail Enamel in Black on Black (used to outline Sasha spots on accent nails)

And there you have it folks! I really love this color combination, and I really want to try even more. Even though my results weren't perfect, I'm personally impressed at how well they turned out. It just goes to show that practice makes perfect and the more you do something, the better at it you can get. In other words, I think this manicure has just fueled my obsession with nail polish. C'est la vie!

What color combinations do you recommend for the next time I attempt to do this manicure? What is your favorite kind of nail art? How do you get you dominant hand to look as good as the other one? My inquiring mind wants to know! Leave a comment below and let me know what you think. Until next time...

  1. Ooh, I so love this nail art! I tried a candy cane mani for Christmas; and while I loved the outcome, it just took too long to complete and let dry. Not sure if I'll be trying more nail art in the future or not. That said, j'adore yours.

I think it would look pretty done in turquoise (China Glaze Aquadelic perhaps) and purple (Essie Play Date). I love that color combo!

P.S. Of course I still want to do a blog swap in February / March!!! :D

  2. It came out gorgeous! My first attempt at nail art (last year) was also animal print, I used hot pink for base and black striper for prints. Sorry I have no tip on application, I am a mess LOL!
