2 New Books from Sky Pony Press to Help Little Ones with Life's Big Changes!

Life is full of changes and some times we're so used to that fact as adults that we forget how they might affect little ones. Two new books from Sky Pony Press help to address some of the feelings and concerns of children as they go through two fairly common periods of adjustment: beginning school and the deployment of a parent. {Books provided for review/feature consideration}

MING GOES TO SCHOOL by Deirdre Sullivan and Maja Löfdahl is a sweet story of a young girl who is starting school for the first time.Kids will relate to Ming, who is curious and playful and ready for adventure but sometimes get scared of new things, and the wonderfully diverse cast of characters makes the story feel like it could take place in any school! Perfect for kids who are experiencing first-day-of-school or back-to-school jitters.

LILLA’S SUNFLOWERS by Colleen Rowan Kosinski is perfect for families where one parent is away for long periods of time or stationed away from home. Before Papa leaves for a trip that will take him far away, Lilla gives him a sunflower seed. After he returns, she receives letters from families with photos of their loved ones pictured with sunflowers. She learns that her gift to her father brightened the dark days for many people… and that her one small seed continued spreading sunshine across the country!

Ming Goes to School was especially fitting for us because Kenziekins is starting kindergarten in the fall and it was an excellent way to gauge her feelings about it as well as role play. Though we are not a military family, at times my girls {particularly Kenzie} get anxious about me leaving the house without them so Lilla's Sunflowers was a nice way to put my short trips {to the grocery store!} in the proper perspective. I highly recommend both books to families with children - they both are really great ways to gain some insight in to your kids feelings as well as teach them that while changes may be difficult to deal with at first, with your help and guidance, they can cope. Until next time...
