Things That You Forget As a Parent

As a parent, there are a lot of things that you forget about. It might be your keys, it might be to pick your son’s clarinet up for the music shop. But there is a general rule we can all agree on, we forget what life was like before we had kids. Here are some of the things that we often forget existed outside of the parenting sphere.

Cars Can Be Fun

When you are buying a car as a parent, you look at things such as the mileage, how many kids you can fit in, and what exactly can we put in the boot. Believe it or not, cars used to be fun for us too. We never used to care about mileage and if we could fit five people and a dog in there. We remember watching Fast and Furious (the first one) and wanting our own jdm cars to race in the streets. We still get to race, it’s just against the time to get to drop off before the bell. Although, some of those extras could make drop-off more interesting ...

Clothes Were Fashionable

There comes a point in your life when you have to have a look in your wardrobe and realise you will never wear half of the clothes that are in there. Glitter boob tube from 1997? Nope. Miniskirt from that holiday in Bali? Not likely. Simply put, our fashion taste has evolved and we now dress for practical and comfort reasons rather than the pants look cute. Rather than throwing it all out, put it away in storage for your own daughters or nieces. Fashion always comes back around again so they might get some use out of that bucket hat with Pokemon on it one day.

Food was Tasty

We know that we need to look after our bodies and we know that it is up to us to make good choices. But, in the olden days, there was not the pressure or the social shame that came letting your kids eat a bit of junk food. As childless people, we didn’t care about what we were eating, as long as it tasted good. Even if you eat clean 99% and allow the odd treat, people look at you as if you are eating a puppy instead of a cookie. If there is one thing we could bring back from the past, it would be the no-shaming over food choices.

Sleeping In

We don’t know about you, but if everyone in our house sleeps in, the parents feel like they have gone five rounds in the ring with an MMA fighter. Sleeping in is not what it used to be. And, when our single and childless friends tell us about the amazing lie-in they got at the weekend, we can’t help but wonder if we ever had that ability. As tired as we may be, our body clocks are set to a certain time now and if we mess with it, we end up wrecked.
